BLACK MATERIALS PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN APPEASING RAIN GOD

Tirumala, 02 September 2026: The five-day Kareerishti Yagam, Parjanya Shanti Homam and Varuna Japam will conclude with Purnahuti on September 03 between 11am and 12noon.

TTD has been conducting this Yagam in Tirumala for over three decades seeking a good amount of rains and prosperity for the state and the country.

Special features of Karirishti Yagam:

The unique feature of this Yagam is the usage of ”Krishnavarna” (black) materials.

As per Vedic tradition, superior substances such as a black horse, black sheep, black honey, black rice, and black dates are used as per shastra.  It is believed that this leads to dense clouds and shower abundant rainfall.

Special importance to invocation of Varuna Devata:

The Yagam is performed chanting the “Marutamasi” Mantras from Krishna Yajurveda. “Galijeru” leaves (Punarnava-Boerhavia diffusa) are offered as Homa Dravya.

Lamps prepared with “Vepashashaka” (Prabbbala leaves-life plant or miracle leaves) are lit around the sacred fire altar, and the Vedic ritual is conducted by the ritwiks who also wear ”Black attires”.

The black smoke that arises when ”Galijeru”(spreading hogweed) leaves are offered in the homa holds special significance in the Vedic procedure and is considered a symbol of abundant rains.

Varuna Japa mantras:

Along with the Kareerishti Yagam, Vedic scholars also perform Varuna Japa chanting the “Varunanuvakas”.

The five-day Vedic ritual which commenced on August 30 with Ankurarpanam, will conclude with Purnahuti on September 03 between 11 AM and 12 noon.
