GURU PURNIMA GARUDA SEVA IN TIRUMALA ON JULY 19

Tirumala, 9 July 2016: The monthly Pournami Garuda Seva which is being observed in Tirumala in a grand manner every month on full moon day, will be unique this month as the day of its arrival on July 19 is the auspicious occasion of Guru Pournami.

IMPORTANCE OF GURU PURNIMA

Among the most important festivals of Hindu Sanatana Dharma, Guru Purnima is considered to be auspicious which is also known as Vyasa Purnima as Maharshi Veda Vyasa penned the Mahabharata with over one lakh slokas in sanskrit and pioneered the world of wisdom. The five pournimas falling between Ashada and Kartika months have religious significance and known as Vyasa Pournima.

LORD HYAGRIVA AS “ADIGURU”

The mythological scriptures says that Lord Maha Vishnu took the incarnation of Lord Hayagriva as a symbol of wisdom. Hence Lord Hayagriva is considered as the first and foremost Lord of Wisdom. He was worshipped by none other than Goddess of Wisdom, Saraswathi Devi. Later she passed on the legacy of worshipping Hayagriva to saint acharyas Sri Ramanujacharya, Vedanta Desikacharya and others.

In Tirumala also, apart from Lord Sri Bhu Varahaswamy and Lord Sri Venkateswara swamy temples, Lord Hayagriva Swamy temple is located on the North Mada Street. The presiding deity is being worshipped by pilgrims especially by children to bestow them with wisdom and knowledge.

On July 19, the processional deity of Lord Malayappa Swamy will take celestial ride on His favourite vahanam Garuda and bless the devotees along the four mada streets between 7pm and 9pm.
