TARIGONDA VENGAMAMBA SET AN EXAMPLE FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT-SCHOLARS

Tirupati, 4 August 2014: The 197th Death Anniversary celebrations of the renowned saint poetess Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba has been observed with some scholarly persons paying tributes in the form of enlightening lectures at Tirupati on Monday.

The two-day fete kick started on Monday and will conclude on Tuesday with a series of spiritual activities including paying floral tributes in the ghat of Vengamamba at Tirumala.

Meanwhile on Monday at Annamacharya Kalamandir in Tirupati the project co-ordinator Dr KJ Krishnamurthy explained the life history of Vengamamba and and her dedicated devotion towards Lord Venkateswara which gave her salvation.He said, Moved by her devotion, Lord Venkateswara himself allowed her to enter the temple after temple hours to hear the poems and songs penned by her. Venkamamba recited poems and took ‘harati’ of the Lord each night and even today, the same harati is rendered to Lord in the name of “Vengamamba Muthyala Harati”.

Puranetihasa Project Special officer Dr Samudrala Lakshmanaiah listed out the great works penned by the saint poetess including Vasista Ramayanamu, Muktikanta Vilasamu, Venkatachala Mahatyam etc.

Prof G Aunakumari of Hyderabad and Dr Kattamanchi Mahalakshmi of Tirupati explained how Vengamamba set as a right example for the empowerment of women fighting against all odds that prevailed in the society in those days with her revolutionary deeds and works.
