ANDAL TIRUPPAVAI TO REPLACE SUPRABHATAM IN TIRUMALA SHRINE FROM
DECEMBER 16 TO JANUARY 15

TIRUMALA, DECEMBER 7: The Andal Tiruppavai will replace Suprabhatam for a month from December 16 to January 15 with the advent of Dhanurmasam, the important month in traditional Hindu calendar as the sun transits through the Dhanur Rashi (Sagittarius) and the period ends with the Makar Sankranti.

Dhanur masa is also known as Marghazhi or Margasira month since it is during this time, Sri Andal or Goda Devi penned about 30 Pasurams in the praise of Lord of Lords. Like the cowherd girls who won the heart of Lord Sri Krishna by performing Katyayani Vratam , Andal did
Margasira Vratam to please Lord Venkateswara. Hence the holy month of Dhanur is also known as Margasira month.

Every day during this month, the temple priests recite the 30 Andal pasurams along with Tondaradippodi Alwar’s 10 pasurams written in Tirupalli Ellichi in the place of Suprabhatam to wake up the Lord.
