Tirumala, 12 October 2018: Dipalis, they are the “Torch Bearers” in Tirumala temple since they carry specially made ghee torches whenever Sri Malayappaswamy comes out of temple.
By the title of the torch with five hand made oil candles called ‘Panchamukhis’ they precede whenever Lord went to light the paths and also to announce the arrival of the Lord.
‘Dipalis are both Praharis (announcers) and also escorts of Lord Venkateswara. Their functions are to follow the lord whenever and wherever He moves out during fairs and festivals.
DIPALIS GIVES ALERT CALL
The chief function of Dipalis is to alert others of the arrival of Lord and also light the path of the lord. They are also carriers of a traditional practice-Drishti- done whenever the deity is brought back into the temple from outside journey.
Since they hold the ghee lit lamps, they are called Dipalis and form an integral part of the paraphernalia of the Lord Venkteswara at Tirumala.
The practice since mythological days and later on through ages has become significant remnants of the lores and traditions of the holy Sri Venkateswara Temple.
Dipalis functions under the Health Department of TTD. The six feet long steel rod with a five-hooded candles is called Panchamukhi. Two such torches are held on both sides of the Lord’s vehicle or palanquin whenever He is brought out and stay with the caravan till the deity re-enters the temple.
The unique feature is that the candles are made of cotton cloth that is dropped by devotees in the Lord’s hundi in countless number every day. They use the used ghee that is left out after preparations of Boondi for Laddus in the temple Kitchen (Potu). They make cricket ball size cloths and soak in the ghee and tie it to the five-hooded steel rod. Another person will keep pouring the ghee onto the cotton balls tied to the hoods of the Panchamukhi regularly to sustain the flame till the deity re -enters the shrine.
One of the Dipali, Sri Ravi (52) says that he has been serving the lord as Dipali for almost 30 years. ‘We have to hold the hot iron rod with blazing torches for hours during vahana sevas and ensure that the Panchamukhi never goes off and is always aflame till the Lord returns to the temple. Panchamukhi represents Panchabhutas, which includes Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Sky. When there is no vahana seva or the deity stays in Vahana mandapam, at least one Panchamukhi is kept burning”, he maintained.

అక్టోబ‌రు 12, తిరుమల, 2018: భూమి, ఆకాశం, నీరు, నిప్పు, వాయువును పంచ‌భూతాలు అంటారు. స‌మ‌స్త జీవ‌రాశులు మ‌నుగ‌డ సాగించాలంటే ఇవి త‌ప్ప‌నిస‌రి. పంచ‌భూతాల‌కు అధిప‌తి అయిన శ్రీ మ‌హావిష్ణువు క‌లియుగంలో శ్రీ వేంక‌టేశ్వ‌రునిగా భ‌క్తుల‌ను క‌టాక్షిస్తున్నాడు. ఈ పంచ‌భూతాల‌కు ప్ర‌తీక అయిన పంచ‌ముఖాల‌కు శ్రీ‌వారి కొలువులో ప్ర‌త్యేక స్థానం ఉంది. స్వామివారికి నిర్వ‌హించే దిన, వార, మాస, వార్షిక ఉత్స‌వాల్లో దీపాలీల చేతుల్లోని పంచ‌ముఖాలు నేతి దీపాలతో వెలిగిపోతుంటాయి. పొడ‌వాటి క‌ర్ర‌కు చివ‌రిలో గుండ్రంగా ఉన్న ఇనుప‌క‌మ్మీని అమ‌ర్చి దానిచుట్టూ ఐదు చిన్న అగ్నిగోళాల‌ను ఏర్పాటుచేస్తారు. దీన్ని పంచ‌ముఖం అని పిలుస్తారు.
పంచ‌ముఖానికి శ్రీ‌వారి హుండీలో భ‌క్తులు కానుక‌గా స‌మ‌ర్పించే కాట‌న్ ముడుపు గుడ్డ‌ల‌ను వినియోగిస్తారు. ముందుగా వీటిని నేతిలో బాగా నాన‌బెట్టి ఉండ‌లుగా త‌యారుచేస్తారు. బూందీ త‌యారీ కోసం వినియోగించిన త‌రువాత మిగిలిన నెయ్యిని పంచ‌ముఖాలు వెలిగించేందుకు వాడతారు. బ్ర‌హ్మోత్స‌వాల సంద‌ర్భంలో రోజుకు 8 నుండి 10 లీట‌ర్ల నెయ్యిని వినియోగిస్తారు. పాత రోజుల్లో రోజుకు 800 గ్రాములు నెయ్యి ఇందుకోసం దిట్టంగా ఉండేది. ఆ త‌రువాత రోజుల్లో నెయ్యి వినియోగం పెరిగింది. 10 మంది దీపాలిలు విధుల్లో ఉంటారు. బ్ర‌హ్మోత్స‌వాల‌కు 4 పంచ‌ముఖాల‌ను వినియోగిస్తున్నారు. ప్ర‌స్తుతం శ్రీ టి.వీరాస్వామి, శ్రీ సి.ర‌వి దీపాలీ విధులు నిర్వ‌హిస్తున్నారు. వీరి స‌హాయ‌కులుగా మ‌రికొంత మంది సిబ్బంది ఉన్నారు.
ప్ర‌తిరోజూ ఉద‌యం నైవేద్య స‌మ‌ర్ప‌ణ స‌మ‌యం నుండి దీపాలీల విధులు మొద‌ల‌వుతాయి. ఉద‌యం శ్రీ వ‌రాహ‌స్వామివాకి, శ్రీ బేడి ఆంజ‌నేయ‌స్వామివారికి, క‌ల్యాణానికి స్వామి, అమ్మ‌వార్ల ఉత్స‌వ‌ర్ల‌ను తీసుకురావ‌డం, అద్దాల మ‌హ‌ల్‌కు వేంచేపు చేయ‌డం, అక్క‌డి నుండి ఆర్జిత సేవ‌ల నిర్వ‌హ‌ణ‌కు వైభ‌వోత్స‌వ మండ‌పానికి తీసుకురావ‌డం, ఊంజ‌ల్‌సేవ, మాడ వీధుల్లో స్వామి, అమ్మ‌వార్ల ఊరేగింపు, రాత్రి నివేద‌న స‌మ‌యాల్లో దీపాలీలు పంచ‌ముఖాల‌తో విధుల్లో ఉంటారు. బ్ర‌హ్మోత్స‌వాల వాహ‌న‌సేవ‌లు, ఇత‌ర రోజుల్లో ఊరేగింపు పూర్త‌యి శ్రీ‌వారి ఆల‌యానికి వ‌చ్చిన‌పుడు ప‌డికావ‌లి వ‌ద్ద ప్ర‌త్యేకంగా కొలువు నిర్వ‌హిస్తారు. ఈ సంద‌ర్భంగా పంచ‌ముఖాల‌తో స్వామి, అమ్మ‌వార్ల‌కు దిష్టి తీస్తారు. ఊరేగింపుల‌తో పాటు నైవేద్య స‌మ‌ర్ప‌ణ, జీయంగార్లు వేంచేసే సంద‌ర్భాల్లో దీపాలీలు దివిటీలు ప‌డ‌తారు.
ప్ర‌త్యేకంగా సందె కొలువు
శ్రీ‌వారి ఆల‌యంలో ప్ర‌తిరోజూ సాయంత్రం స‌మ‌యంలో ప్ర‌త్యేకంగా సందె కొలువు నిర్వ‌హిస్తారు. ఇందులోభాగంగా శ్రీ‌వారి మ‌హ‌ద్వారం బ‌య‌ట రెండు సార్లు, ధ్వ‌జ‌స్తంభానికి ఒక‌సారి, వెండి వాకిలి దాటిన త‌రువాత బ‌లిపీఠం వ‌ద్ద ఒక‌సారి పంచ‌ముఖాల‌తో దిష్టి తీస్తారు.
